Description and Photos - Deus Ex (PC CD)

Deus Ex (PC CD)

Product Description:

  • Developers Ion Storm owed us something pretty special and futuristic shoot, spy and stalk- em-up Deus Ex more than makes up for the disappointment of Daikatana. Deus Ex is set in a nearby future where a deadly virus ravages the world s populace, terrorists are bent on exposing corrupt governments and conspiratorial elites are ready to wade in and wreak havoc. You play a techno-enhanced agent tasked with getting to the bottom of it all without cashing in your chips.

Immediately noticeable is the attention to detail, there s no end of objects and characters to interact with--too much, were it not for the consequences that arise from almost every interaction. Such random actions as killing a guard or accidentally walking into the ladies toilets can significantly affect mission outcomes. The best game will result from stealthy inch-by-inch exploration and you ll be glad you did.

Considering that Deus Ex has gameplay in bucketloads, it could look like Commander Keen and get away with it. Thankfully though, the Unreal engine does a more than passable job of rendering some beautiful locations and although models may look a little blocky compared to games using more sophisticated engines, the minor flaws melt away as the game gets going.

By no means a perfect title, Deus Ex, as its name implies, has come from nowhere and lifted the FPS role-playing adventure out of its hybrid quagmire of genres. With a richly detailed story and great visuals, it boasts a seamless, technically accomplished and truly engrossing game world for those wanting to flex so much more than just their trigger fingers. --Tae Mawson

Customer Ratings:

  • Still a masterpiece. I ve owned this game for quite some time, and decided I really ought to add my review. True, it s dated today, but it says much that it s one of two games my girlfriend will happily sit and watch me play (the other being Halflife 2) - it s that involving & entertaining. Equally, it s a game that still has surprises up its sleeve - after a fourth (or is it fifth..) playthrough, I found a few decision branches I had never come across before, and I consider myself fairly thorough when it comes to RPG-style games.

If there were a phrase to sum up the gameplay, it would be solve the problems your way . I don t think I ve had a game that offered this much freedom in dealing with the game world before or since, even including vastly more open-ended games like Morrowind and its ilk. You can pretty much run the gamut, from setting cats alight with a flamethrower and blowing up entire areas, enemies and friends alike (there are of course consequences to your actions), to negotiation, hacking and stealth where you need not kill a single enemy (though you might well knock out or run away from a fair few). It s linear in approach, and so replay value comes from alternative choices rather than seeing entirely new content, but then, this is the approach taken by a lot of RPGs of the era and since. It s more stilted in execution than a modern game, but I have little trouble even today ignoring flaws in character pathing and other technical issues that modern games have improved upon, when the actual gameplay is rock solid.

Today, the graphics are dated, but graphics have never made a game. The political intrigue & conspiracy theory in the game coupled with the sheer depth of story, along with one of the most flexible combat & character development systems I ve ever come across (before or after this game), makes this a must-have for any RPG fan. It presents concepts and theories, along with a pretty good story, that really make you think - it challenges preconceptions and asks plenty of what if questions, whilst propelling you the player through a complex (albeit linear) world of factions, power players, and secrets, where nothing is quite what it seems. It s a game for the subtle of mind, the critical thinker, the type who will read every newspaper and email throughout the game, to fully experience the world into which you re immersed.

Whilst it still runs on modern PCs, get this game.
  • The best so far.. When I started to play this game I couldn t believe how good it was going to be, it is like going into the Matrix.I will miss this game when I have finished it. I m nearly 50 and I say thanks for the experience.Even the soundtrack is good.
  • Best game....EVER!. Played on Windows Vista64.

So many great reviews, i dont need to say a word. Excpet add my rating, in respect to such a fantastic game.
  • DeusEx is one of the best RPG ever. Fantastic game. Period. I have never after DeusEx played a game that gave you a comparable leeway in how you want to approach a game, or how to overcome obstacles - brute force, sneaking - through the back door or through the front door - the choice is all yours. The depth of the story is excellent as well. DeusEx ist one of the best RPGs ever made.

I d only wish it had MassEffect s graphics and moves for taking cover and the like, then it would be perfect. In its day the graphics were state of the art and it is still a hugely entertaining game.

As for the package itself: The SoldOut software is IMO dispensable. It doesn t run well under Vista 64bit and Windows 7 64bit. It does run well under XP Professional 32bit.
  • Vast, expansive game - well worth a look. Deus Ex is the game I was desperate to play in around 2001. Today, the graphics and sounds are dated, but the gameplay is still excellent. Set in a dystopian future with a burgeoning conspiracy, you play the augmented antiterror agent, JC Denton. As you travel further and further, the conspiracy unfolds, and you simply don t know who to trust.

It feels a lot like the first Half Life, or Jedi Knight, but with heaps more interaction - there s an inventory system much like Diablo, skills to put points into, weapons to modify and augmentations to make you run faster, aim better and be stronger - ultimately making you a bit of a superhuman. The narrative is continuous, with no breaks, which adds to the feeling of an unfolding story. There are some great touches - damage is localised, so falling will damage your legs. There are real PCs to hack, and you can guess usernames and passwords if you re savvy.

The story unfolds nicely, and it s a huge game - it took me weeks to complete, so the value for money today is unmatched. There are annoying elements - it s not always obvious what you should do, and the aiming system (a bit like a pre-Stalker system) where you wait for crosshairs to get smaller by floating over the target, can be frustrating. You do miss things, but it s such a huge game that nothing is essential to find, and you can t possible hope to find everything. That said, an automap wouldn t have gone astray - the images you re provided with at times can be unreliable and hard to follow. It s also never completely light - at times it adds to the sense of conspiracy, but it can just feel annoying.

The sense of conspiracy is fantastic, and you really feel like your brain is getting a workout as you try to unravel who to trust. It can be frustrating at times, but you ll rarely get stuck. The sense of growing power is also great - when you can regenerate lost limbs in seconds, or walk past enemies completely cloaked - it s extremely satisfying.

All in all, it s still very much worth a look today if you ve never played it before - a great game, and still standing the test of time well.
